The Flat River – A Timeless Treasure
The Flat River has always been at the heart of the Ranch. Long before the addition of campsites, trail horses, or dance halls, the peaceful stretch of riverbank offered a scenic landscape that would define the future of the Double RR Ranch. This early postcard scene shows the river as it appeared to travelers and locals generations ago.
Early Recreation at the Ranch
This vintage photograph highlights one of the Ranch's earliest expansions during the 1960s: the swimming pool and lodge area. As camping and recreation boomed, families gathered here after trail rides, canoeing trips, and summer events. The pool became a central hub for fun and community.
The Campground Thrives
This aerial view from the 1970s captures the Ranch at full capacity during peak season. RVs and campers fill the grounds, surrounding the central pool and lodge facilities. This era marked the golden age of family camping, with generations discovering the joy of outdoor recreation along the Flat River. The Ranch became a beloved summer destination that families returned to year after year.
The Original A-Frame Chalets
This vintage postcard showcases the rustic charm of the Ranch's A-frame chalets from their early days. These unique accommodations offered families a comfortable alternative to tent camping, featuring cozy interiors with sleeping lofts and stunning views of the surrounding woodlands. The chalets remain a beloved option today, now upgraded with modern amenities including air conditioning while maintaining their classic rustic appeal.
History of the Double RR Ranch
The Double RR Ranch began as the Reeves family dairy farm on Whites Bridge Road in Belding, Michigan. When Dayton Reeves suffered a life-changing automobile accident that brought the dairy operation to an end, his wife Margaret saw potential where others might have seen loss. In 1959, she transformed the dairy barn—cleaning it out, rebuilding it, and reopening it as a lively dance hall and banquet space for the community.
That same year, the Ranch purchased its first saddle horses and canoes, offering guided trail rides and river adventures along the Flat River. The early 1960s brought growth: 22 rustic campsites, the Bunkhouse with six rooms, and four A-Frame chalets. The addition of overhead electric and modern restrooms soon upgraded the guest experience.
In 1968, Margaret and Dayton's only son, Richard, and his wife Mary Ellen took over operations. Under their leadership, the Ranch expanded dramatically—adding a second pool, additional shower facilities, and growing the campground to nearly 100 sites. Richard's long-held dream of a golf course was realized in 1998, with the 9-hole course opening in 2002.
A New Era of Leadership
In recent years, the Ranch entered a chapter defined by legacy and transition. Following the passing of Richard and Mary Ellen Reeves—whose decades of dedication shaped the Ranch into an iconic local destination—ownership passed to their son Steven Reeves. Steve and his wife Holly now proudly serve as the third-generation owner-operators.
Their son Dayton, a recent graduate of Belding High School, is already deeply involved in day-to-day ranch operations. His leadership, passion, and hands-on knowledge mark the beginning of the fourth generation of Reeves family stewardship. With Dayton stepping confidently into this role, the rich traditions and welcoming spirit of the Double RR Ranch are set to continue for generations to come.
Today, the Double RR Ranch remains a cherished destination for families, campers, golfers, trail riders, and river adventurers—still guided by the same spirit of community, fun, and togetherness that began in 1959.

Dayton & Margaret Reeves (1959-1968)
Founders who transformed a dairy farm into a community recreation destination, establishing the ranch's legacy of hospitality and outdoor adventure.
Richard & Mary Ellen Reeves (1968-2020s)
Expanded the ranch to nearly 100 campsites, added pools and modern facilities, and realized the dream of the Iron Horse Golf Course.
